The Instinctual Subtypes and Relationships
A one-day workshop online with Peter O'Hanrahan
Saturday, June 28, 2025 | 8am-3pm US Pacific time
When it comes to relationships, the enneagram really helps! This must be the most popular application of the system. We can get quick, practical tips for how to build better relationships at home and at work. For example, do more of this and less of that; adapt your style a little with this person; speak to people’s concerns for security, love, and belonging. And if you choose to go deeper, practice empathy in your heart and being grounded in your body. For the subtypes, we can also practice sensing our bodies, and learning how we express and connect with our three instincts.
We can start by saying this: there are nine personality types, and each of them has three important variations depending on our “priority” instinct. These variations are called subtypes: a self preservation subtype, a one to one (or sexual) subtype, and a social subtype. 27 wonderful aspects of the human community and 27 paths in life.
When it comes to relationships the subtypes can be as important in daily life as the nine personality types! Please join us for a day of exploration with this vital part of the enneagram system.
You will learn:
- What are the subtype priorities and needs for security and care
 - How to build better relationships with the subtypes at home and at work
 - Strengths and challenges with the six relationship combinations
 - How the instincts can be more balanced in our personal relationships

The format will include presentations, discussion and breakout groups. Each person will receive a digital copy of Peter’s “Subtypes in Relationships” handbook upon registering.
You don’t have to know your subtype to attend, but basic enneagram knowledge is required.
Peter O’Hanrahan is an enneagram teacher and coach with 45 years experience. He first learned the enneagram in 1978 in Berkeley, California with Kathleen Speeth PhD and Helen Palmer, and began to include it in his practice as a counselor and body therapist. As the director of the Center for Human Growth in Berkeley he hosted many of the early public classes and began teaching the basic enneagram and subtypes using panel interviews.
Since 1998, he has worked as a trainer or faculty member for the Palmer/Daniels Professional Training, now the Narrative Enneagram school. He currently teaches workshops on the Subtypes, the Embodied Enneagram, and other topics in the U.S., Europe and Asia. More information on the subtypes can be found here.

Phenomenal experience. Excellent teacher. Personable. Amiable.
I gained deeper insights, far beyond textual knowledge, rich with emotional understanding of the Instincts and Subtypes. Peter has met a wide assortment of people on his journeys, and he’s got that talent for picking up how their instincts mesh with their enneagram type. It’s not easy for me to notice these nuances; however, Peter used many live examples which helped me enormously. Excellent teacher. Personable. Amiable. I am so glad I had this opportunity.
